A Memory of Titanic - Image 3
One hundred and fourteen years ago in the early hours of 15th April, 1912, the ocean liner, Titanic met her tragic end, hitting an iceberg and sinking. Over 1500 people lost their lives.
The ship was built in Belfast, Northern Ireland and registered in Liverpool, NW England, with the White Star Line, a British shipping company.
In and around Crosby and Waterloo, Liverpool, are many details of people that were on the Titanic during her fateful maiden journey to New York.
The father of Joseph Bruce Ismay (known as Bruce, and the managing director of the White Star Line; and a survivor of the sinking in 1912) Thomas Henry Ismay, was the founder of the White Star Line. He owned a big house that overlooks Crosby beach (image 3), in Waterloo. Thomas Henry Ismay died before the Titanic disaster.
The captain of the Titanic, Edward John Smith, is said to have lived in 3 different properties within Seaforth and Waterloo. Image 1, shows his third house. This house also overlooks Crosby beach and is in the same street as the house that was owned by Thomas Henry Ismay.
Titanic's Senior assistant 2nd Engineer was Herbert Edward "Bertie" Wilson. By a complete accident, I found his gravestone in a local church graveyard, not so long ago; the details are seen in the 5th image.
