Grey Phalarope
Crosby Marina Lake, Liverpool, September 25th 2018
A bird that breeds in the high Arctic of Siberia and Canada and apparently lives out in the open ocean around South America and West Africa during the winter months.
This one may have been blown in during the recent strong winds whilst migrating.
Their breeding colours are a beautiful rich chestnut colour with patches of white and black; the female being the larger of the two.
I read that they have been seen eating lice from the back of Whales.
They're probably around the same size as a Starling, in length, but look very dainty and elegant.
